The Death Of Little Italy

In a not so shocking piece by The New York Times, it seems that Little Italy is no more, in terms of native born Italians.  Maybe they should check out Little Italy in the Bronx which is still alive and well even with the influx of Albanians in the last few decades?

Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, Your Huddled Masses

In a city and country built by immigrants, mynewyork is no stranger to those of distant and strange shores yearning to breathe free and begin working towards the  American Dream.  This article in the New York Times tells the tale of how the immigrant enclave of Chinatown has become the unofficial employment center for many other newcomers besides those from China. From Guatemala to Burma, these newyorkers come here to take their first steps towards achieving that dream. [READ MORE]

Snow Bride of Bay Ridge

"Snow Bride of Bay Ridge" photo: Alex Irrizari

Fellow newyorker, Alex Irizzari of Bay Ridge sent in this picture of the Snow Bride of Bay Ridge on 76th between 4th and 5th.  Very reminiscent of a past newyorker pic of "Scary Lady on 14th Street". Big THANKS to Alex for sharing this pic with us!

Train of Thought - The Z Train and WHAT IS IT?!

So one of the great things of being on Facebook is that I get to read thousands of posts a day especially by my fellow newyorkers.  Here's a piece from Derrick Kardos:
"i took the Z train today. freak train. i never take that train! i look around and its got all these weird freaky people on it. where are they going? are they even new yorkers? even the J train laughs at the Z train. smh."
The subway is really an amazing place...each line has its own "personality" if you will as evidenced by Derrick in the above musing.  What's your underground experience? What makes you tick-tock underground???

Underground NYC - Mole People and All

Ever since I could remember, I have always been fascinated with what lurks beneath this behemoth of a city.  NPR and the New York Times recently went on an (illegal) excursion to explore that world along with Steve Duncan who is currently working on his PhD in urban history at the University of California.
At first I thought I would have LOVED to have been in that group of explorers but then when I read that they treaded through raw sewage, rats and roaches, I quickly decided that I could live vicariously through the story...

Thanks to all who contributed pictures from around the New York City Region.  If you have anymore pics that you would like to add to the slide show just contact us!

Make sure to watch it in HD!
Special thanks goes to Derrick Kardos, fellow newyorker of Manhattan, who suggested the beautiful song, "Amid the Falling Snow" by Enya.  Enjoy!

Homeless newyorkers

Count your blessings, fellow newyorkers during the coming blizzard...thousands of our fellow newyorkers don't have a home to protect them from the elements.  They will have to make do wherever they can find a place to camp whether a homeless shelter or underground in our subways.

Bundle up because the weather outside is frightful!

Staten Island - The "Other" Borough. Where Are You SI?!

So, Staten Island - WHAT are you?  We want to know.  Staten Island is to New York City what New Jersey is to the Tri-State Region.  The butt of endless jokes.  What do we really know about our southern neighbors?  The image that I put together above is pretty much what, most of us not familiar with Staten Island, know about the place.  We know there's a huge landfill; you can't take a subway there but you can ride the ferry for free to get there; and finally the New York City Marathon starts there.
Besides that and the fact that Staten Islanders seem to have much more in common with Jersey (yuk) than the rest of newyorkers we don't know much.
So now this is YOUR time to tell us WHO you are, WHAT is Staten Island about.  We want to know what makes you tick. What grinds your gears...WHERE do you like to eat or have fun? Most of all we want to know WHY Staten Island?
Contact us at citizennyc1@gmail.com or go to our official page on Facebook and sound off!

What's Wrong With This Picture

Typical Friday night? Bunch of newyorkers on the train standing casually as if nothing is wrong.  Gotta love this great city of ours.  No we're not cruel and jaded - work just know the difference between dead and alive.

New York City's Mosaic Is Getting Duller?

Just like the mosaic above called "One Race, One World, One Universe" is created by thousands of different colors and hues to paint a picture and show a story, so do the diverse people of New York City create a bright, colorful tapestry of this wonderful city we live in. Let's face it, where else can you visit different lands, experience foreign cultures, taste exotic foods for a mere $2.25? (Soon to be $2.50 - thanks, MTA for forgetting the lube before bending us over for the latest and most vicious  fare hike.)

But according to new census data released on Tuesday and reported  by the New York Times, some areas of the city have lost large numbers of Hispanic and Black populations as a result of gentrification. The trend, however, seems to be the opposite in the 'burbs as they have had a huge increase in ethnically diverse residents.

What do YOU think, my fellow newyorkers? Has your neighborhood gone through "the change"?

Oh and if you're interested in seeing the mosaic artwork above in person, just hop on the 2 and 5 trains to 3rd Avenue / 149th Street in the Bronx neighborhood of  Melrose  and take a look around the platform. Feel free to take a walk around the neighborhood and treat yourself to one of dozens of diverse Latin American restaurants within blocks of the station. Melrose is home to the largest concentration of Puerto Ricans in a congressional district of the United States, however, as times and neighborhoods change, you can now find amazing and authentic home cooked Mexican fare, Salvadoran and Ecuadorian alongside the longer established Puerto Rican and Dominican restaurants.

John Lennon - A newyorker Through and Through

30 years ago the life of not just a newyorker,  but a citizen of the world, was cut short.  We lost not a musician, not an artist; we lost an extraordinary human being.   To this day he still teaches us  to imagine , something children do but somehow we forget as we age.   Let us remember to never forget to  IMAGINE .

929 - New Area Code For New York City

Seems like newyorkers are getting area code #6 when 929 is introduced on April 16, 2011.  The area code will be for all the "outer" boroughs of The Bronx, Brookly, Queens and Staten Island.  Apparently Manhattanites won't need another area code just yet.  Remember that, Gaga, when you call your little monsters in New York City.

The Crazies - NYC Naked Edition #nyc #burlesque

When this video was brought to my attention by fellow mynewyork reader, Jamie G. up in the Bronx I was FLOORED...newyorkers do come in all shades of crazy but that's what makes us such an exciting place...you never know when you're gonna get a free peep show.
(please be 18 years or older of age to view this video)

New York Faces - Fran Lebowitz - Must Watch Documentary

If ever there was an image of the quintessential newyorker,  Fran Lebowitz  would definitely fit the bill.   Like many newyorkers, Ms. Lebowitz is very opinionated but unlike most, she is one of the most quoted speakers and is known to be the queen of one liners.

Now, another newyorker,  Martin Scorcese, gives us almost 90 Lebowitz filled minutes in a new HBO documentary called Public Speaking.  Fellow newyorker, Annmarie S., who recommended the documentary to mynewyork, said that Fran Lebowitz's "...comment on the impact of the AIDS crisis on our society and culture surpasses any I've ever heard as far as capturing the impact of the loss of that echelon of society."  After reading such a powerful statement by Annmarie, I just had to tune in and I was definitely not disappointed.

A big thanks to newyorker, Annmarie S. for tipping us on this great piece of ournewyork!

The Many Faces of newyorkers

Over 8,000,000 newyorkers...that's a lot of face.  Check out this interesting project by photographer Simon Høgsberg where he photographed 10 faces that spoke to him (apparently Latinos and Asians didn't speak to him). I live for Joan Darrow and Rhoda Lukin - they are the quintessential faces of the native newyorkers that often we associate with the crème de la crème of fashionistas and the art world.  Make sure you read what face #6, Allen Makere has to say.
